About The Brand: Mammut

1 We have been stocking Mammut for well over a year now here at Simply Hike, so it only seems fitting that they were next in line for our “About The Brand” blog series. When you think of Mammut you will instantly think of climbing and alpinism but they are really starting to take hold of the hill walking market over here in the UK as well. Let’s dive into the rich history of Mammut….. In 1862 after finishing his three year apprenticeship as a rope maker Kaspar Tanner started up his own rope business. In 1878 Kaspar moves production to Lenzburg where he gets permission to use the public way next to his flat as a rope wall to braid and coil his ropes, in 1897 Kaspar’s son Oscar takes over the business and throughout the 1900’s he pushes rope making into the modern world creating new and more efficient machinery, and also making the rope makers a stock corporation company. Pushing the rope technology in 1952 the “Mammut Argenta” is the first ever glacier rope to be made from nylon yarn and again in 1958 the “Mammut Everest” is the first ever braided Mammut mountaineering rope with a kernmantel constriction. It wasn’t until 1970s that Mammut started to spread their wings. In 1974 the brand was changed from Mammut Ropes to Mammut Guarantee and in 1978 they released their first line for Gore-Tex jackets and trousers called the “Altitude” range. This paved the way for Mammut to really hone in clothing and equipment. Throughout the 1980s they pushed themselves in the outdoor market. They introduced sleeping bags in 1981, new softshell technology in 1984 and in 1989 Mammut acquired the rucksack specialists Furst AG. 7 3 Mammut in the 90s was all about expanding the brand, firstly by purchasing Toko in 1993 and in 1994 introducing the Mammut logo we all know and love today. The expansion carried on in '00s with them buying Norwegian sleeping bag specialists Ajungilak, Raichle footwear, Lucido head torch manufacturer and in 2006 they launched the Pulse Barryvox avalanche rescue device. Since 2010 Mammut have gone from strength to strength with their new central warehouse built in Germany, becoming a Bluesign member in 2011, celebrating 150 years in 2012 and in that same year designing and developing the Airbag rucksack. To think all this started in a rope factory in Wohlen in 1862! Mammut Before we talk about our favourite Mammut gear we want to inspire you guys and girls! The quality that Mammut put into all their equipment they also put into their videos so sit back and enjoy some of our favourite videos from Mammut:
4 8 So you have read Mammut's history, you have seen some of our favourite videos, now let’s talk about some of our favourite Mammut products.

Comfort High Walking Boot

p1 New out this season (2015) is the Mammut Comfort High walking boot. Yes we know its new, how can it already be one of our favourites? Well as soon as all of us here at Simply Hike saw it we fell in love with it! Firstly this boot uses the new Gore-Tex surround system which gives you all round ventilation and waterproofing (we wrote a blog about it click >here< to read it) making this boot perfect in hot and colder climates. This Comfort High uses Mammut's rolling concept which gives you customised support and cushioning which helps support natural foot roll. The boot is covered in Ripstop material meaning you really can put it through its paces and with Mammut's very own Gripex sole you can rest assured that losing grip won’t be an issue.

Ultimate Hoody

p3 This softshell hoody is a perfect all-rounder. You could wear it on an everyday basis as a general hoodie, but due to the Gore Windstopper technology it makes a perfect midlayer when hiking. Due to the fit of the hoody it really moves with you giving you great flexibility and works perfectly at keeping you nice and cool. The Gore Windstopper technology is a great touch to this softshell keeping the harsh wind out so it doesn’t interfere with your core body temperature but working with the fit of the hoody it still lets body heat out to help cool you down. They have even added thumb holes in the cuff to secure movement which helps maintain body heat. The Ultimate hoody has deep secure pockets, two way zips for extra ventilation, giving you easier access and drawstrings which will ensure a perfect fit keeping the elements out.

Heron Pro 85 Plus 15 Rucksack

p2 Although the size of this rucksack might put people off it really is a light weight pack! Of course due to its size it’s ideal for people on long hiking expeditions or gap year trips. The main reason we have picked this rucksack is for its simple 4 step back system which makes it easy to adjust before you put this pack on your back as well as when you're half way through your trip. The lid of the Heron can be converted to a lumber pack for shorter trips, it is of course hydration compatible and to top it off you even have a main zip at the front which opens up the main section of the rucksack which makes it ideal when you are on a long expedition.   There we have it, our About the Brand Blog: Mammut.
