Gaiters are an essential when walking in ankle deep snow, low level streams and amongst debris on the mountain and will keep out dirt and skree to keep you comfortable during your expedition. Wearing walking gaiters will allow you to cover the top of your shoe or boot which is vulnerable to letting in muck. Don't let gaiters confuse you, they're really straight forward just choose the right pair for the trip you have planned.

Choose a gaiter where the strap is snug and won't fall off. Gaiters can be a right hassle getting on and off but that's the point, you want them to be tight enough to protect your boot and prevent stones stealing their way in and you don't want to walk through mud and find your gaiter is coming off.

The fabric of the gaiter will define how well the gaiter will withstand the wet weather. Gore-Tex gaiters are superior and will definitely keep boots 100% dry. They're great for rain and snow all year round. Coated Nylon gaiters are basic gaiters and are light and great for a short day hike. They'll keep boots dry but won't be as breathable as a Gore-Tex boot gaiter. Cordura gaiters are really rugged and great for abrasion against rock and ice so choose these if you're planning on trekking further a field.

Finally, we'd suggest wearing waterproof pants or overtrousers over your gaiters as this creates a great waterproof seal so you'll remain dry and comfortable throughout your hike.
