About Berghaus…

Berghaus are passionate about outdoor adventures.  They know trust is earned and they have a reputation built up over more than 40 years as an innovator of outstanding outdoor technical performance gear.  Awarded the Queens Award for innovation in the design and technical development of outdoor products, Berghaus have been trusted by outdoor athletes for over four decades.  Initially inspired by climbers and mountaineers frustrated by a lack of decent gear to meet their performance demands outdoors, Berghaus have been selling and then making quality technical gear since 1966. 

Set up as LD Mountain Centre by Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison in Newcastle it wasn’t long before it was renamed to Berghaus, the literal german translation of Mountain Centre, to give a broader appeal to all outdoor enthusiasts and leisure adventurers.  In the early 90’s Berghaus were taken over by The Pentland Group PLC, who also had Speedo and Ellesse, making Berghaus one of the worlds best resourced performance companies.  As an approved supplier of gear for the Duke of Edinburgh awards, Berghaus ensure the correct equipment is designed for the award level of the youngster participating.

Berghaus innovation…

Berghaus first started innovating in the late 60’s, not long after setting up shop in Newcastle, designing, making and testing their own gear to meet what was really wanted and needed by climbers and passionate outdoor enthusiasts.  In the mid 70’s Gore-Tex was the latest innovative technology, being breathable as well as waterproof, and Berghaus were one of the first European retailers to introduce it into their range.  In the 80’s Berghaus began supplying technical gear for expeditions and introduced a new concept, the zipped-in fleece jacket. 

Berghaus have won several awards including the Queens Award for Export in 1988 and the Queens Award for Innovation in 2006.  Earlier in 2000, their Nitro rucksack, which had a unique compression and limpet carrying system won The Millenium Product award from The Design Council of Great Britain and in 2005 they won the sports trade show ispo Award for Innovation with their Bioflex® back system for rucksacks, designed to bend, flex and twist in line with the body’s natural movement.  Renowned for their dedication to research and development, Berghaus continue to innovate with fabric technology such as the Berghaus Aquafoil (AQ), that is lightweight, waterproof and breathable, to provide the very latest performance gear for the maximum outdoor fun.

In 1985 when mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington climbed Everest he was officially wearing Berghaus gear and even today Berghaus continue to sponsor expeditions, helping outdoor adventurers push boundaries with their performance.  Berghaus also have a team of 20 outdoor athletes that wear Berghaus products on adventures spanning the globe, including inspirational adventurer and sit-skier Karen Darke, mountain bikers and climbers like Leo Holding who seem to be fearless, BASE jumpers, extreme winter sports fanatics, snowboarders, free climbers, mountaineers, an alpine freerider, a climbing photographer, world class boulderer Leah Crane, adventure racers and world famous climber Mick Fowler.
