An established UK based company based on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Snugpak have a reputation as one of the UK and Europe's last manufacturers of sleeping bags and insulated clothing.
It started with a bodywarmer and the rest is history …
Bryony Harris, then a deep sea diver and secretary, spotted the bodywarmer trend sweeping America back in 1976 and felt sure it would catch on in the UK, so she taught her husband, Brett Harris, to sew and they produced some bodywarmers and jackets to try out on the UK market.
The couple both had jobs during the day, so they spent all their spare time making as many bodywarmers as they could, eventually with the help of a couple of outworkers. The weekly production in the early days averaged around 15 jackets.
A couple of years later, Snugpak was born. Bryony and Brett realised that they needed to branch out and produce a product with year round appeal. The sleeping bag seemed like the obvious next step.
Snugpak went from strength to strength and, by 1986, they'd outgrown their premises and moved into the listed mill they still occupy today.
Innovation was the way forward. Traditionally, man made sleeping bags were bulky. Brett realised that the company needed to produce a cheaper, man made equivalent to the more costly down filled bag.
The Softie 6 and 12 sleeping bags were manufactured in 1987 and were the smallest synthetic sleeping bags on the market. They were an instant success and are still in production today. The company has embraced new fabric and insulation technology and materials to refine and expand upon the Softie and there are now several different models to choose from.
Snugpak products combine the hi-tech with traditional human craftsmanship. Their Technik sleeping bags, for example, are quilted using the most state of the art materials and machinery and are assembled by hand by their team of highly skilled staff. The company has not lost the human touch, whilst at the same time investing in and embracing the most up-to-date technologies. This makes for fine quality products made by a proud team of dedicated workers.

Softie insulation. Exclusive to Snugpak
Softie is the brand name for the down-like polyester filling used inside most of our range of Snugpak sleeping bags, as well as the Sasquatch hiking jacket. As its name suggests, it's extremely soft.
Softie is made from staple yarns that mimic the composition of natural insulators and the result is a sleeping bag filling with super-fine filaments and a natural soft touch that retains heat even when it's wet.
