Trangia Mini Trangia 28-T

Trangia Mini Trangia 28-T

The Mini Trangia Stove 28-T is a storm-proof, spirit burning aluminium stove that is a practical and lightweight stove, perfect for the lone walker. Specially produced for the multi-sport competitor, the Trangia is a light, fast and reliable camping stove for hiking in the outdoors, in all weathers. A windshield, a burner, a pan, a combined lid/frypan and a handle. It is lightweight, needs no special care and is hardwearing. The Trangia stove is reliable, without unnecessary parts that can go wrong or be adversely affected by cold. The stove is quick to set up, and packs into a compact unit that takes up minimal space.

The silent burner has a simple, durable and safe design. Regardless of the weather, wind and season, it is easy to light. The spirit burner takes up little space and weighs less than a gas burner. The simmer ring is used to regulate the heat, which saves fuel, and is used to extinguish the flame. In severe cold, a winter attachment can be useful. A pre-heater is placed under the burner, filled with fuel and lit to warm up the burner. The accompanying, reflective plate is used as a base. The Trangia stove can also run on bottled gas. The Trangia range of accessories includes a gas burner and a multi-fuel burner.

Overrated stove

Overrated stove. Can't see why it's getting so many rave reviews. As soon as there is a little wind, efficiency goes down the dark cellar. The windshield keeps the flame from going out but does not keep the heat. Huge flames shoot out of the burner console while cooking. Very unsafe, must be placed on a heat resistant surface. In-tent cooking is out of the question. The Mini is not worthy of the Trangia name. Get the 27 series instead, which is a great stove - in the field the extra weight and size will be offset by much better fuel efficiency and safer/nicer handling. If you already bought this one, know that the saucepan will fit nicely in the 1-liter pans of the 27 series. Avoid unless you are going to cook only in a sheltered location or know how to make a good windshield.

A great little stove

A great little stove. People say that Trangias are heavy, but this version is compact and reasonably lightweight. It needs a simple windshield for best efficiency. I like the fact that you can store any unburnt fuel in the stove.

I can never give a spirit stove 10/10 because flame...

I can never give a spirit stove 10/10 because flame heat is not going to be as great as other fuels. Also I replaced the 'pan-grip' for a more substantial one. The one provided was okay with the pans but add that to walking on mud or rocks and I prefer the extra security. One week old and already used in anger. Coffee and chicken soup by the river in below freezing conditions. Excellent. Fuel very easy to find.

Plus points

Plus points - Burner/support/pan combo very neat when packed away, light and minimalist for backpacking, no sharp edges, non stick fry pan/lid. Very well made and designed. Doesn't go out in bad weather, easy to set fire to if you have to use a flint and striker coz the lighter/matches are wet or it's too windy. Minus points - you have to carry a bottle of meths as well which is bigger than a self sealing gas canister. The handle isn't the standard Trangia one but a less substantial clip type affair made of thin metal to save weight and space. It works, but could scratch the lid if you lose the protective plastic packing. The pan support is a little more precarious than a gas canister, even though it's a similar diameter, due to not being so heavy and the pan/shield construction being quite top loaded when cooking. This is only good for one pot one person use, unless you're boiling water to rehydrate packet food for two - and if you want a cup of tea, you have to wash the pan up after dinner before you can boil your water! It does what it's designed to do very well, but it's designed to be minimalist, so think about whether you want light and compact, or something a bit more luxurious, versatile, and heavier!

As with the larger Trangias

As with the larger Trangias, this one's beautifully designed - marks off only for the rather silly pan size (not really a meal's worth).

Overall

Overall, very good. Packs up nicely. Trivial to use. No canisters to dispose of. Minor downsides are the aluminum saucepan that can stain, and gets through a fair amount of fuel (inherent to any meths burner)
