Five of the Best Destinations for Winter Sports in Europe

Europe is known for its many countries filled with history, incredible architecture, and diverse cultures offering unique traditions and cuisines.  It is no wonder, therefore, that it is such a popular tourist destination throughout the year.  But one thing that makes Europe appealing is the opportunity to participate in winter sports, which thrive there during the winter season and beyond.

From snow-shoeing to sledding, skiing, snowmobiling, and snowboarding, there are many places in Europe that you can travel to at any time of the year when you need to escape into the snow and see yourself atop a mountain.  Whether you decide to ski down the intense slopes of France, enjoy the local history after a day in the snow in Italy, take a snowmobiling safari through the wilderness of Sweden, or cross-country ski in Austria, Europe is a prime destination for all winter sporting activities anyone who loves the snow will enjoy.

Here are five countries you can visit which offer winter sports throughout many of their cities. Five of the Best Places for European Winter Sports
  • Switzerland: This is one nation that you can visit all year round and enjoy winter sports, thanks to higher elevations that boast snow throughout every season.  Though the country is extremely popular for its skiing destinations, including St. Moritz and Zermatt, other winter sports are available, such as snow-shoeing, sledding (also known as tobogganing), and snow biking, an activity that has people biking down slopes at full feed.
  • Italy: In Bormio, you can enjoy skiing year round, with the best winter skiing in Valecetta and summertime skiing in Stelvio Pass.  Bormio is also a historical destination, so while you are relaxing after a day of skiing, you can check out the city and take in the sights.  You can also take in some history while unwinding in the city’s thermal spas, which happen to be the same ones that Leonardo da Vinci used to enjoy.
  • Austria: In this country, you can find destinations for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding activities, but the season typically runs from December through March.  Cross-country skiing is popular here, with Saalbach Hinterglemm as the best location for finding trails.
  • Sweden: In addition to the skiing, snowboarding, and cross-country skiing that Sweden’s winter landscape can offer, this country has a lush countryside and immense forests, with lakes, streams, and wilderness that will delight the nature enthusiastic.  Though you can find a variety of winter sporting activities throughout the year, one of the most desirable activities in Sweden is snowmobiling because you can ride through the natural landscape and really take in all the sites.  Snowmobile safaris are offered that range from the relaxing to the challenging through the Swedish Lapland.
  • France: Truly adventurous skiers will love the mountains of France, which offer high altitudes and even glacier skiing.  There are many resorts to choose from, including Chamonix, Avoriaz, The Three Valleys, and Val d’Isere, all of which offer ski slopes for everyone from the beginner to the advanced skier.
