Walking trousers are perfect for hiking and travel and what you choose to wear is really a matter of preference. Think about what you'll be doing in your walking trousers and think about what you want from them. Do you prefer a cargo pant with plenty of pockets for all your kit? Do you want something a little more versatile such as a convertible trouser than converts into a short when the temperature increases? Are you looking for a more technical trouser such as a windproof pant or stretch version for easier movements? We have all these styles in a variety of leg lengths to make your choice easy.
Our walking trousers are packed full of features to make sure you're comfortable when walking. Most trousers offer UV protection which is built into the fabric. This means it cannot be washed away and will last the lifetime of the product. This essentially protects your skin from UV rays which sounds nice but if you consider that you can be out all day on a summer hike and never once sunscreen covered legs then this protection is a godsend! Contrary to popular belief fabric will not protect against burning so having this interwoven into your pants is a brilliant feature!
If you're going to be walking in a country that is susceptible to heavy rainfall like the typical British summer then keep an eye out for water resistant fabrics or trousers that have a DWR coating. This means water won't soak into the fabric in a shower and will just bead off the surface. This is no substitute for a good waterproof overtrouser but knowing you'll stay reasonably dry gives some peace of mind.
If you're going to be walking by water or in Scotland then think about taking an insect repellent with you. Conveniently this repellent is now also built into some walking trousers. Craghoppers have a range of Nosilife trousers that will kill midges and mosquitos on contact meaning you won't risk itchy bites or potential diseases such as malaria.
Stretch trousers are great for walking as they don't restrict movement and are great for scrambling. Stretch trousers tend to fit better, don't cause chaffing or rubbing and are becoming more and more popular. Our more technical trousers are in a stretch fabric but look for softshell trousers which are windproof. These are really great for windy days on the mountain and will keep you comfortable.
