What should you look for in a sleeping bag? This does depend on what temperature you’ll be sleeping in. First of all, look for the temperature rating on the sleeping bag. Under EN13537 a comfort temperature is given to determine how warm the bag will be. A warm bag will be suitable for winter use or 4 season use. Look for the Comfort Temperature which is the temperature at which a standard adult woman can have a comfortable night’s sleeping. The EN standard assumes that the sleeper is lightly clothed, using a sleeping mat and is hydrated and well fed. If you’re camping in the summer, a comfort temperature of 10 degrees or higher is good, for camping in frost or snow look for a comfort rating of -5 degrees or higher.

To make things easy we use a ‘season’ guide. Choose a 1 season bag if you’re camping on a warm summer night, 2 season is designed for late spring into early autumn in the UK, 3 season is for Spring through to late Autumn where you will expect cold nights but no frost and 4 season is for frost and snow or winter use. All of sleeping bags will state the season rating.

What else should you look for? Look for mummy shaped bags which will fit the shape of your body and prevent cold spots forming. Cold spots form in pockets of fabric that aren’t being warmed by the body. The trick to staying warm is to prevent heat loss and keep any body heat inside the bag. Many bags will include zip and neck baffles both of which prevent heat being lost through the zip or around the neck. More technical bags will have a thin layer of foil inside the bag structure that reflects heat back in. Square or rectangular sleeping bags will provide more room for a relaxed sleeping position and are great for those hot summer nights or as a spare duvet inside.

We offer a range of long, short and women’s sleeping bags to provide a good fit. If you’re short and use a standard length bag then those dreaded cold spots will form around your feet and will make sleeping difficult. Women tend to feel the cold more than men and so women’s bags have more insulation in high heat loss areas such as the hip and footbox. Bags are also shorter and narrower in the shoulders to prevent cold spots. Our technical sleeping bags from Vango and Mountain Hardwear offer long and women specific bags so look out for these.

Sleeping bags are insulated with either down or synthetic insulation and occasionally there are hybrids of these. Down is very lofty and traps air against the body to create a warm layer. It’s useless when wet so watch out if there is a lot of condensation in your tent. Down sleeping bags are measured by their fill power. This is the volume that 1 ounce of down fills up and so the higher the quantity of down the higher the loft and therefore the higher the number (Fill power ranges from 450 to 900). The higher the number the warmer the bag will be. 100% down is expensive and so many brands use a down to feather ratio. Usually this is 80:20 or 90:10 with the latter being a better quality bag. Feathers won’t trap as much warmth as down.

Synthetic sleeping bags are cheaper than down and perform even when wet. They dry fast and are easier to care for, however, they’re less packable and durable than down. Synthetic insulation is often hollow fibred which allows air to be trapped and then warmed by the body which keeps you cosy. Fill power isn’t used here so brands provide a weight in grams with the higher the number being thicker and therefore warmer. Not all parts of the sleeping bags may be the same thickness and this is called body mapping. Areas that require more warmth and therefore insulation will be thicker.

Finally look at the construction of the bag. Single wall construction means that there is a single layer of insulation. Double or triple means 2 or 3 layers and will be warmer. Sewn thought or stitch through construction means that the insulation has stitch holes through it which can cause cold spots. Look for offset construction which means 2 layers overlap meaning that heat won’t be lost.
