We offer a large range of mens walking jackets including insulated jackets, 3 in 1s, down jackets and shell jackets to suit hill walking or just wearing in the woods. We hand pick the best mens coats from a wide variety of brands including Berghaus, Montane, Mountain Hardwear, Didriksons and The North Face and choose some great colours and cuts depending on your needs.
What do you need your jacket for? If you just need something that will keep the rain off and will be relying on a midlayer for warmth then go for a shell jacket. These jackets are thin with either a waterproof membrane such as Gore-Tex or eVent or they have a waterproof coating such as HyVent, Hydroshell or AQ2. Our shell jackets are fully seam sealed and are breathable and windproof for comfort and protection on the mountain.
If you want a jacket for warmth as well as protection from the rain look at our 3 in 1 or triclimate jackets or look out for insulated jackets. 3 in 1s and triclimates are like a jacket version of the swiss army knife! These mens hiking coats include a shell outer jacket and a detachable inner fleece jacket. You can then wear each item alone or together on cold days. Ultimately this is an excellent year round jacket as it'll be suitable for summer and winter use.
Insulated jackets have an outer waterproof fabric and then a layer of insulation to keep you really warm on biting cold days. The insulation can be down or a synthetic fill and there are benefits to both. Synthetic filled jackets are less expensive, don't require specialist cleaning and resistant to moisture. Down jackets have an excellent warmth to weight ratio. This means they're warm without excess bulk or added weight. They also pack down really small so they're great for putting in your rucksack for when temperatures drop.
If you're planning on running or carrying out high energy activites look out for Gore-Tex Active shell jackets. These are 28% lighter than standard Gore-Tex coats but are highly breathable meaning you won't get clammy. These are generally great for summer hikes too.
Our jackets don't just keep you warm and dry, they're packed full of features to help you enjoy the outdoors whilst staying comfortable. Look out for a hood which comes in a suprising range of styles from roll away hoods that pack into the collar to removable versions. Here at Simply Hike we prefer a fixed, attached hood that cannot be rolled away, preferably with a wire peak to prevent raining running into your eyes. Look out for 3D adjustment points when you can adjust the hood around your head to suit your needs.
Our more technical shell jackets are packable and lightweight with many packing down into a pocket or stuff sack. Also keep an eye out for waterproof zips, pit zips for ventilation under the arms and articulated or pre-bent sleeves which allows for easier movements.
If you plan to use a rucksack with your jacket choose a nylon face fabric. This fabric is more durable and heavy shoulder straps won't cause abrasion on the shoulders. Some jackets come with a reinforced shoulder area so keep an eye out for these styles.
Whatever you buy remember that for it to last you will need to take care of it. Washing your waterproof jacket every month will make sure the waterproof membrane won't clog up with dirt and reduce ventilation. By washing with a Nikwax reproofer you will also reinstate the DWR layer on your jacket. DWR is a durable water repellent coating which allows water to roll easily off the surface. If this coating isn't maintained the face fabric will 'wet out' meaning water will sit against the membrane. To reinstate the DWR just reproof and tumble dry (always check the label first).
