Base layers are an essential for any hiker and adds a comfortable layer that moves moisture away from the skins surface and will keep you dry during periods of exertion.
A base layer can be worn during summer and winter and will have different properties. Adding a base layer underneath a fleece and jacket provides a great layering system perfect for winter walks. A base layer for summer won't provide extra warmth but will help with UV protection as well as wicking moisture away for a cooling feel and can be worn alone rather than under layers.
