If you're thinking about buying a rucksack, the first thing to do, before you even start looking, is think about what you are going to be using it for. Are you planning short day walks, or longer trips? Will you be carrying a tent? Or are you just looking for something to commute with? The answers to these kinds of questions will determine what kind of The North Face rucksack you end up buying.

For those looking for something to take along on short walks or hikes, a small daysack should be sufficient around 20 to 40 litres of capacity. This smaller rucksack should have enough room to take some extra clothing, snacks or lunch and maybe walking poles. The North Face has a number of smaller rucksacks that will suit anyone planning day-trips, including a fully waterproof option. Check out the Jester and Recon for a smaller rucksack.

If you are thinking about a longer walk, or possibly a multi-day expedition, then a larger rucksack will be more suitable such as the North Face Terra rucksack range. When carrying a larger load, it's a good idea to have a few separate pockets for food, drink, maps and a waterproof. These are the sort of things you want to have easily accessible, without having to empty all your equipment from the main body of the rucksack. Larger multi-day packs are available from The North Face in a variety of sizes, and they have added technical features not usually available on smaller packs such as adjustable backsystems and hipbelts.

But some people simply want a rucksack that they can use as a day-to-day carry-all bag for town or university and this collection has plenty of The North Face rucksacks that will handle that task too. Many come with built in padded laptop sleeves and plenty of pockets for books, pens, phones and other day-to-day essentials. Have a look at the Borealis, Surge II and Big Shot rucksacks.

The North Face Casimir 27 backpacks come in nautical Blue for men and Malbec Red for women, but they are identical in terms of features and outline, with 27 litre single buckle top loading pocket and gender specific hipbelts and harnesses.

Similarly, The North Face Angstrom 20 rucksacks come in Nautical Blue for men and Jaden Green for women and they share the following features: they hold 20 litres, yet weigh just over 700 grams, their large main compartments, zipped front pockets and bungee on top of them, making them the perfect Pursuit packs. The same channel ventilation, mesh padded harness and adjustable chest strap and hip belt features apply to these backpacks, as well. They are also hydration system compatible.

The North Face Borealis rucksacks also come in pairs, in dark blue versus light blue colours. These 29 litre rucksacks are best-selling packs that have been revamped. They come with back saver systems to support your back, with spine channels and extra padding, laptop sleeves, hydration port and storable, winged hipbelt.

The North Face Jester and the Womens Isabella are quite similar, but the 27 litre Jester does not come with an adjustable back system, like the 22 litre Isabella. These models are ideal for commuters or students, as they have large main compartments that can hold books and binders, their secondary compartments are suitable for organising pens, and they have stitched foam back panels. The North Face Isabella also comes with a laptop sleeve, mesh water bottle pockets on either side and a small pocket at the front.

Our pride and joy, The North Face Big Shot II in black is a spacious backpack that can hold 32 litres, is hydration compatible and it can carry a 15 inch laptop. This American Chiropractic Association endorsed backpack boasts BackSaver technology, which will keep the pack as close as can be to your back, and FlexVent shoulder straps for extra comfort. This is the perfect backpack for work, travel, school or casual hiking.
